the New State of Oklahoma

Oklahoma's status as a new State filled its 1908 inhabitants with energy and enthusiasm. Pleased with their city's location near two railroad lines, Lawton's citizens envisioned a future characterized by population growth, economic development, and increased prosperity. Educational opportunities, they argued, would attract new residents, create jobs, and endow Southwestern Oklahoma with a skilled workforce. Improved living conditions and increased population could result.
