School programs promoted student self confidence and critical thinking skills, as evidenced by willingness to protest when circumstance merited. Two girl students wrote a letter of complaint against dorm matron Augusta Shepler after she had them followed and punished for allegedly lying about their evening activities. The girls stood behind their complaint, even when President Farley tried to dismiss it. Community members took the matter seriously, and it resulted in Shepler's resignation. [1]
