Emphasis on Student Physical
Development Was a Persistent Theme

A focus on physical exercise continued throughout the school's history. In 1922, President A.E. Wickizer developed and implemented a "program of school exercises." Each morning before breakfast faculty called students outside and directed them in "various forms of calisthenics . . . and military drills." Participation in physical activities stopped for breakfast and began again at the end of the school day. The program required each student to participate in some form of athletic activity, either on a competitive or recreational basis. Students who did not participate in basketball, baseball, football or track teams played volleyball or participated in chaperoned hikes and "old fashion playground games." [1]
