CSSA Programs Helped
Maintain a Way of Life

Blacksmithing Class

CSSA's focus on encouraging boys and girls to accept the traditional farm family division of duties system proved comforting to those who viewed society as threatened by the growth of cities. Boys learned to cultivate crops and raise livestock. Girls learned to cook, clean and decorate the home, make clothing, and care for ill family members. Sex-segregated courses and programs offered Lawtonians a sense of security about the future.
