Position Purpose
The Police Chief is responsible for the operational and administrative functions of planning, directing and supervising the City of Lawton Police Department.
Job Duties/Knowledge
Plans, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates departmental activities. Plans and implements a law enforcement program for the City that effectively implements the policies and goals of City Management and Council. Reviews Department performance. Responsible for annual department budget. Plans, implements and monitors recruitment, personnel selection and training. Prepares and submits periodic reports to the City Manager regarding the Departments activities, and prepares a variety of other reports reflecting daily, weekly, monthly and annual activities and statistics. Knowledge of principles, theories, procedures, trends and methods of law enforcement and administration. Knowledge of the principles and techniques of governmental administration, management and the application of. Ability to effectively coordinate, supervise and direct a large department including professional, clerical, emergency communications and technical positions. Ability to establish long and short term goals and plans. Ability to interface effectively with various groups of people. Knowledge and application of current and new practices and principles of police administration and law enforcement. Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local laws and ordinances and the enforcement thereof. Ability to provide effective leadership with advanced level of interpersonal skills. Cooperates and coordinates with County, State, and Federal law enforcement as appropriate where activities of the Police Department are involved. Ensures the laws and ordinances are enforced and that the public peace and safety is maintained. Maintains confidentiality. Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment. Represents the City at various events.
Requirement-Education & Experience
Graduation from a college or university with a bachelors degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration, or a closely related field preferred, and at least four years experience in law enforcement at the command level, and completion of a basic law enforcement training academy or equivalent. Must possess, or be able to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Oklahoma’s drivers license without record of suspension or revocation. Ability to meet departmental physical standards. Be certified as a peace officer in this state by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET), or meet all requirements necessary for CLEET certification and obtain such certification within six (6) months of assuming the position of chief of police and successfully complete a course of training meeting at least the minimal criteria established by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) for police chief administration, successfully completed an approved police chief administrative school approved by the Council, or successfully complete such course of training or school within twelve (12) months of assuming the position of chief of police.
