2011“One to Six” Winner, Tom Biggs
The “One to Six” Art Purchase Award was created to support the mission and goals o f the Lawton Arts & Humanities Council and the City of Lawton by purchasing original artwork to be presented to the six recipients of the annual Lawton Cultural Awards. They are ple ased to announce that Tom Biggs is the recipient of the City of Lawton/Lawton Arts & Humanities Council’s 2011 “One to Six” Art Purchase Award.
Biggs, a watercolor artist, grew up in Peoria, Illinois and received his degree in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Michigan. He notes that, “I have always had a fascination of the arts, and some of my earliest memories are of my mother visiting art and antique shows with me in tow.” His love of art, and 40+ years as an oil and gas exploration executive, has afforded him the opportunity to travel the globe and experience first hand some of the world’s finest modern and classical art.
Drawing and painting have always been a passion for Tom; and following retirement, he now devotes his free time to his art. He has become an accomplished award-winning artist in acrylics, oils, gouache, and pen and ink; however, his current emphasis is watercolor. His subject matter consist of landscapes, animals, floral, and urban scenes inspired by places he as visited in his extensive travels and the beautiful Wichita Mountain area in Oklahoma where he now lives. “While these settings bring their own sense of magic and wonder, I strive to capture and evoke the feelings and romance unique to each image.”
As an artist, Tom has won “Best of Show” in New Mexico and Oklahoma; and he is the recipient of numerous first place awards in juried art shows. He has also had several solo exhibitions. In 2010, Tom’s watercolors were recognized when he was selected as the featured artist in the Governor’s Gallery, Oklahoma State Capital in Oklahoma City. Other solo exhibits include the Pride Gallery and the Museum of the Great Plains in Lawton, Oklahoma as well as the West End Gallery at the Kemp Art Center in Wichita Falls, Texas.
